In this moment there are two active contracts in Batalha and Pombal which are intended by the company Australis Oil & Gas. The contracts have been signed by the government of PSD/CDS-PP on September 30th 2015, namely four days before the legislative elections.
The company arranged two drillings in 2019, one in Aljubarrota and the other one in Bajouca.
Despite the discourse about the decarbonisation of the economy, the government of PS launched two public consultations, in which it auscultates the population about the necessity of a research about the environmental impact of these drillings.
The gas drilling in this area threatens not only the entire subterranean aquifer area (one of the biggest of the country), but also the archaeological heritage. This means a disaster for the local agriculture, even if the report of the Evaluation of the Environmental Impact says there wouldn’t be any damage, this environmental impact will always exist and is already evaluated by the climate science.
The contracts foresee the possibility of hydraulic fracturing, a highly polluting method with increased risks (chemichal contamination of soil and water and seismic activity in the region). The company insists that this drilling will not use this method during research, but actually the contract provides that if the tutelary authority does not respond to a hydraulic fracturing permit application within 30 days, it is considered approved. Investing in fossil fuels can not be justified by puns or legal subterfuges of this kind.
We stopped the drilling of Aljezur. Now its time to stop the drillings in Aljubarrota and Bajouca.
